NEW YORK CITY, NY –
The death of 27-year-old Elizabeth Baron after an anti-aging infusion at a Bronx wellness center has been ruled a homicide, sharpening questions about criminal accountability and the oversight of businesses offering medical-style treatments.
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner determined that Baron died from a cardiac air embolism after air was introduced into her intravenous catheter, according to reporting published September 21. The New York Police Department reclassified the case as a homicide.
A homicide ruling describes the manner of death. It does not, by itself, establish murder, manslaughter or the guilt of any person. Prosecutors must still decide whether the evidence supports new or upgraded criminal charges.
Police arrested Luis Rojas Cabrera after Baron’s July 19 death. Court records cited by local reporting say he was charged with reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of a profession. He has not been convicted, and he is entitled to the presumption of innocence.
Investigators said Rojas Cabrera administered nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, commonly called NAD+, through an IV at Bereshit Lifestyle Center in Riverdale. Baron went into medical distress and was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where she died.
Reporting on the original criminal complaint said Rojas Cabrera was not licensed to practice medicine in New York. His website presented him as the center’s founder and promoted natural medicine and wellness therapies.
The new medical-examiner finding changes the stakes. A fatal air embolism is not an abstract risk or an adverse reaction that can be explained away by marketing language. It points investigators toward the mechanics of the IV procedure, the training of the person who performed it, and the safeguards that were present or missing.
The Bronx District Attorney’s Office has urged anyone who may have received treatment from the center to contact prosecutors. That request suggests the investigation extends beyond one encounter and may examine the center’s broader practices.
The case also exposes a larger consumer-protection problem. New Yorkers increasingly encounter IV infusions, injectables and other procedures in businesses that look more like spas than medical offices. Polished branding can make it difficult to tell who is licensed, who is supervising the procedure, and which agency is responsible for enforcement.
A 2025 city-state investigation of medical spas found violations that officials said threatened public health and safety. Baron’s death now raises a harder question: whether existing rules are being enforced before someone is harmed, or only after a crisis.
Authorities have not publicly answered several key questions. Who purchased and stored the infusion supplies? What training and emergency equipment were available? Was a licensed physician supervising the procedure? Had any agency previously received complaints about the center?
Those answers matter for Baron’s family and for every customer trying to distinguish a legitimate medical service from an unauthorized practice.
Prosecutors must follow the evidence and avoid charging ahead of what they can prove. Regulators should not wait for the criminal case to finish before examining the licensing and enforcement gaps exposed by Baron’s death.
The homicide ruling confirms that this was not simply a wellness treatment that went wrong. A young woman died after air entered an IV line. The public deserves a clear accounting of who was responsible, what oversight failed, and what changes will prevent another death.
