A man accused of hunting for NBC personalities inside Rockefeller Center allegedly reached the backstage area of the “Today” show, hurled a racial slur at anchor Craig Melvin and lunged toward him before police intervened.
Now, a security guard has reportedly been fired as serious questions mount over how an unauthorized intruder managed to penetrate one of the most recognizable television studios in the country.
Andrew Truelove, 41, allegedly entered NBC’s Studio 1A complex through a rear stairwell and slipped past security before making his way into a restricted backstage area.
According to published reports citing police sources, Truelove was searching for longtime “Today” show personality Al Roker but encountered Melvin instead.
The encounter allegedly turned racist and threatening.
Truelove reportedly told Melvin that he had always wanted to use the N-word against a Black celebrity, then allegedly swung and lunged toward the veteran broadcaster.
Melvin alerted security, and an NYPD officer working a paid detail took Truelove into custody. Roker and Melvin appeared on the air roughly 15 minutes later.
The incident exposes an extraordinary security breakdown at a studio located in the heart of Rockefeller Center, where crowds regularly gather outside and high-profile journalists, celebrities and public officials move through the building.
A guard responsible for the area was later terminated, according to TMZ.
NBC confirmed that an unauthorized person entered a vestibule near Studio 1A and approached Melvin. The network said the suspect was detained without further incident and maintained that there was no physical altercation and no one was injured.
That carefully worded account appears to conflict with reports that Truelove attempted to strike or lunge at Melvin.
The discrepancy raises questions about whether NBC is minimizing the seriousness of the breach while its internal investigation remains underway.
This was not merely an overzealous fan wandering into the wrong hallway.
Prosecutors have charged Truelove with burglary and menacing as hate crimes, along with criminal trespass and harassment. A judge ordered him held on $10,000 bond following his arraignment Thursday night.
The alleged attack also underscores the persistent threat faced by Black journalists and public figures, who are increasingly exposed to racial harassment both online and in person.
Melvin was doing his job inside what should have been a secure workplace. Instead, he was allegedly confronted by a man who had bypassed security and appeared eager to turn racist hatred into a personal encounter.
NBC may have fired one guard, but terminating a single employee does not answer the larger question:
How did a man accused of openly targeting television personalities get close enough to threaten one of them?
Until NBC provides a full accounting of the breach, the public is left with an unsettling reality: An alleged hate-motivated intruder reached the backstage area of a live national television broadcast, and the security system failed before police finally stopped him.
